SAN DIEGO, California, October 17, 2026 — Santa Ana winds forced San Diego International Airport (SAN) to flip its single runway and triggered two FAA ground stops and an all-day cap on arrivals on Friday, October 16. More than 200 flights were affected, and the high-wind warning runs until 8 p.m. Saturday.

What happened

  • Runway flip: Strong easterly winds pushed SAN into an east-flow configuration, using Runway 9 instead of its usual Runway 27. SAN has just one runway, 9,401 feet long.
  • First ground stop: 8:26 a.m. to about 9:45 a.m. Pacific, for flights bound for San Diego from airports under the Los Angeles, Oakland, Salt Lake City, Denver and Albuquerque centers. The FAA listed the cause as “weather / wind.”
  • Ground delay program: Issued at 9:19 a.m. for arrivals from anywhere in the lower 48 through 11:59 p.m. Friday. It capped arrivals at 22 an hour from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 24 an hour in the evening. When issued, the average assigned delay was 88 minutes, and the longest was 2 hours 31 minutes.
  • Second ground stop: 9:59 to 11:15 a.m. for departures within Los Angeles Center airspace, listed as “volume / multi-taxi.”
  • Impact: About 200 flights were delayed as of 10:20 a.m., and FlightAware showed more than 200 impacted flights, ABC 10News reported. No airline-by-airline breakdown has been published.
  • Weekend outlook: The National Weather Service’s high-wind warning for the county’s valleys runs to 8 p.m. Saturday, October 17. Santa Ana winds are forecast to ease slowly through Saturday and end by Sunday. As of Friday morning the FAA had not announced a San Diego program for Saturday (TBA).

What it means for non-revs

  • Check SAN status before you leave on Saturday. Winds are easing, but the warning is still up until Saturday evening, and another runway flip would cut arrival rates again. The FAA’s NAS Status page shows any active ground stop or delay program.
  • Expect fuller flights Saturday. Passengers who misconnected or were cancelled on Friday will be rebooked onto weekend flights into and out of San Diego.
  • Have a backup. With one runway, SAN has little room to recover. Other Southern California airports can serve as alternates if SAN’s arrival rate is cut again.
  • Allow for misconnects if you are connecting to or from San Diego through a hub on the same day.
