October 19, 2026 — RIU’s first Palace hotel in Mexico is back in business after a top-to-bottom renovation, and it has changed who it is for: the beachfront Riu Palace Mexico in Playacar, Playa del Carmen, now welcomes adults only.
What is happening
Caribbean Journal reported on October 19 that the resort, which first opened in 1999, reopened in September 2026 (RIU has not published an exact day) following a comprehensive renovation. The adults-only policy applies to the whole hotel, not just a premium wing. All 434 rooms were redone with softer colors, natural wood, warm lighting and larger windows opening onto balconies or terraces, and the resort added new dining spaces and a new Elite Club section.

Rooms, dining and the new Elite Club
The Elite Club is the resort’s new upgraded tier. Its 56 rooms include 30 with private pools, and Elite guests get a separate check-in, premium drinks, their own infinity pool with a private bar, à la carte breakfast, and a dedicated restaurant and bar for dinner.
The nine restaurants are Don Julián (international buffet), Miyagi (Asian-inspired), La Dolce Vita (Italian), Krystal (gourmet), a steakhouse, Guacamole (poolside), Tiki Taco, Pepe’s Grill and the Elite Club restaurant. The six bars are Cubano in the lobby, the Capuchino patisserie, Los Mariachi on the plaza, the Tequila swim-up bar, a 24-hour sports bar with an American Country menu, and the Elite Club bar. Guests can also go to themed RIU Party events at the neighboring Riu Tequila.
Caribbean Journal noted that RIU’s announcement referred to Cancún, but the hotel actually sits farther south along the coast in Playa del Carmen. The same report points to RIU’s recently renovated Riu Palace Peninsula in Cancún, which also added an Elite Club.
What it means for airline travelers
- Fly into Cancún (CUN). Playa del Carmen is about 55 km (34 miles) south of Cancún International on Federal Highway 307, roughly a 45–60 minute drive depending on traffic. Leave yourself that buffer when planning a same-day arrival on a standby trip.
- It is open now. The renovation is finished, so there is no construction disruption to plan around.
- No kids, at all. Families who used to stay here will need another RIU; couples and adult groups get the whole resort.
- Rates and booking: the report gave no prices, and none of the sources mentioned a travel-industry or airline-employee rate. Check RIU directly before you book.
