October 24, 2026 — Global Ports Holding (GPH), which has run San Juan Cruise Port in Puerto Rico since February 2024, says its modernization program of more than $200 million is due to finish in the fourth quarter of 2026. The work covers structural repairs, berths, terminals and port operations, including new passenger boarding bridges.
Proposed next projects
| Project | Cost | Funding | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| New cruise terminal at Piers 11 and 12, adding homeport capacity | More than $200 million | Expected to be private | TBA |
| Demolition and rebuild of historic Pier 1, Old San Juan | About $114 million | Mostly federal CDBG-MIT and FEMA funds | TBA |
GPH’s Mike Maura Jr. called San Juan “a key part of our growth strategy across the Americas.”
What it means for airline travelers
- San Juan’s Luis Muñoz Marín airport (SJU) is close to the cruise piers and has many nonstop flights from U.S. cities, which makes it one of the easier homeports to fly standby to.
- Upgrades through the end of 2026 may change which pier or terminal your ship uses. Check your cruise documents before you leave.
- No travel-industry or interline rates were mentioned.
