October 30, 2026 — Guests booked on MSC Opera’s October 29 departure from Civitavecchia, Italy, were told by text on October 28 that their cruise was cancelled “due to technical reasons,” according to Cruise Hive. Some guests were then told they could board in Livorno instead.
What happened
- The notice: Text messages went out on October 28, one day before the earliest embarkation. Not every guest received the text.
- The cause: MSC Cruises has not confirmed the technical problem. MSC Opera (2,658 guests) has been in dry dock in Valletta, Malta, since earlier in October and was still there when the article was written.
- Refunds: The cancellation notice promised a full refund for the cancelled cruise plus reimbursement of travel and accommodation expenses.
- Livorno option: Some guests were told embarkation had moved to Livorno on October 31, a port the ship was already due to call at that day. One guest’s email offered a free hotel, a bus to Livorno and onboard credit. Another guest was told the cruise was not fully cancelled.
- Website: The October 29 departures have been removed from MSC’s website. Civitavecchia had not updated its port schedule.
MSC Opera runs overlapping Mediterranean itineraries, so guests on the same ship had different embarkation ports, including Genoa and Livorno. The length of each affected cruise and how many guests were affected were not published (TBA).
| Date | Port | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Oct. 29, 2026 | Civitavecchia (Rome) | Departure cancelled |
| Oct. 31, 2026 | Livorno | Alternative embarkation offered to some guests |
| TBA | Genoa | Embarkation option on overlapping itineraries; status TBA |
Some guests worried the texts were a phishing scam, but others confirmed the cancellation directly with MSC.
What it means for airline travelers
- Confirm before you rebook. If you get a text like this, call MSC or your travel agent using a number you already have, not a link in the message, before changing any flights.
- Keep every receipt. MSC’s notice promised to reimburse travel and accommodation costs, so save airline, hotel and transfer receipts.
- Rome vs. Pisa. Civitavecchia is normally reached through Rome Fiumicino (FCO). If you are moved to Livorno, Pisa (PSA) is the closest airport. Flying standby, a change of port this late can mean a new routing, so travel a day early where you can.
- Flying home. If your cruise ends early or in a different port, check your return flight before you leave home.
