Virgin Voyages Readies Hurricane Reroute for Brilliant Lady’s Oct. 3 Mexican Riviera Sailing

October 1, 2026 — Virgin Voyages has told guests booked on Brilliant Lady’s October 3 Mexican Riviera sailing from Los Angeles that the trip may be rerouted away from Hurricane Rachel, and has a backup itinerary ready that could swap Mexico’s sunshine for cooler California coast ports.

What happened

Brilliant Lady (2,770 guests) is scheduled to leave Los Angeles on Saturday, October 3, 2026 for a 7-night Mexican Riviera cruise. Virgin warned guests that the ship’s planned route puts it close to the path of Hurricane Rachel and said it has prepared an alternative itinerary. The line expected to make its final routing call on October 1. At the time of writing, the revised ports had not been published.

Virgin’s advice to guests was to pack a few extra layers and a light jacket, a strong hint that the backup route heads north. Cruise Fever reports that the contingency plan includes San Francisco, San Diego, Catalina Island and Ensenada, and that the ship’s previous sailing earlier this week was also reworked toward Northern California. Virgin also noted there is “a real chance Rachel curves further out into the Pacific,” which would let the original route stand.

The original itinerary

Date Port
Oct 3, 2026 Los Angeles (embark)
Oct 5, 2026 Cabo San Lucas
Oct 6, 2026 Mazatlán
Oct 7, 2026 Puerto Vallarta
Oct 10, 2026 Los Angeles (disembark)

Where the storm stands

As of the National Hurricane Center’s evening advisory on September 30, Rachel had 90 mph winds and was forecast to pass south of the Baja California peninsula on October 1 before turning west, with forecasters warning it could become a major hurricane within a couple of days. Coastal warnings for mainland Mexico had been dropped, but dangerous swells and rip currents were expected around Los Cabos through the end of the week.

Because Brilliant Lady is a foreign-flagged ship sailing round trip from a U.S. port, U.S. cabotage law (the Passenger Vessel Services Act) means any substitute route still has to include at least one foreign port, such as Ensenada, Victoria or Vancouver.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Your flights probably don’t change. The cruise still starts and ends in Los Angeles on October 3 and 10, so a reroute changes the ports, not your air. Keep your LAX (or Long Beach, Burbank, Ontario) plans as they are unless Virgin tells you otherwise.
  • Fly in a day early if you’re nonrevving. Weekend loads into Southern California can be tight. Arriving on October 2 gives you a full day of standby options before the ship sails.
  • Pack for both versions of the trip. Bring warm-weather clothes and a jacket. If the ship heads north, coastal California and the Pacific Northwest can be chilly and damp in early October.
  • Shore excursions: If ports change, check your Virgin app for refunds on cancelled tours and new options in the substitute ports.
  • Interline and industry fares: No change to travel-industry rates or eligibility has been announced.
