October 2, 2026 — Royal Caribbean International is moving some Ovation of the Seas guests out of cabins they paid extra to choose, and a separate report says the ship’s Los Angeles sailings from late November 2027 are being cancelled as it redeploys to Brisbane. The line also named the headline show for Hero of the Seas, and Galveston moved ahead on talks for a new Royal Caribbean terminal.
Ovation of the Seas: cabin reassignments
Cruise Hive reports that guests booked on Ovation of the Seas, including the October 12, 2026 four-night Catalina Island and Ensenada sailing, have been told their stateroom’s occupancy has to be adjusted and that they will be moved to a cabin in the same or a higher category. Until a new cabin is assigned, the booking shows as a guarantee (GTY) reservation. The ship gained 40 staterooms in its April 2026 refit; guests suspect lifeboat and muster capacity is behind the moves, but Royal Caribbean has not confirmed a reason. Compensation has been uneven: some guests report onboard credit, while one who paid about $300 to pick a cabin says a refund request was denied. The number of guests affected is TBA.
Ovation of the Seas: Los Angeles sailings cancelled from November 2027
Cruisenews.io reports that Royal Caribbean has cancelled Ovation of the Seas’ Los Angeles departures beginning with the November 22, 2027 sailing, cutting short a California deployment that had been planned to run through 2028. The ship is to move to Brisbane, Australia, for cruises of three to eight nights. Guests are offered a full refund or a move to Navigator of the Seas departing November 29, 2027, with change fees waived; fare and tax differences may still apply. The line cited “scheduling, port agreements, and other operational considerations.” This is a single-outlet report; the full list of cancelled dates and Brisbane start date are TBA.
Hero of the Seas gets “The SpongeBob Musical”
Royal Caribbean said on October 2 that the first at-sea production of “The SpongeBob Musical” will play in the Royal Theater on Hero of the Seas, its fourth Icon-class ship. Hero debuts from Miami in August 2027 on seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises that all call at Perfect Day at CocoCay.
Galveston: fifth terminal talks continue
The Galveston Wharves board voted unanimously to keep negotiating with Royal Caribbean on a fifth cruise terminal at Pier 14, under closer board oversight. Under the outline, Royal Caribbean would build the terminal and the port would build a berth able to take Icon-class ships. The earliest opening is 2030. Icon of the Seas is due to begin sailing from Texas in August 2027.
What it means for airline travelers
- Booked on Ovation of the Seas? Check your reservation for a GTY status and call the line or your travel agent about compensation if a cabin you paid to select has been taken away. A final cabin number may not appear until close to sailing.
- Los Angeles in late 2027: if you hold an Ovation booking from November 22, 2027 onward, confirm its status with Royal Caribbean before lining up flights. The offered alternative sails a week later on a different ship, so any listed standby dates or positive-space tickets would need to move too.
- Airports: the Los Angeles cruise terminal at San Pedro is served by LAX and Long Beach (LGB). Hero of the Seas sails from Miami (MIA, with Fort Lauderdale FLL as a backup). Galveston is reached from Houston Hobby (HOU) or Intercontinental (IAH).
- Flying standby: aim to arrive the day before embarkation, particularly for the short Los Angeles cruises where the ship will not wait.
- Interline rates: none of the reports mention any change to travel-industry rates. If you booked at one, ask whether a move to another ship keeps the same rate.
