October 3, 2026 — Update to our October 2 story. The 48-hour transport stoppage threatened for Monday and Tuesday, October 5–6, in Santa Cruz is neither confirmed nor cancelled. As of Saturday morning, El Deber reported the decision was still pending.

What changed

  • Fare: on Friday evening the Santa Cruz city council approved a provisional adult fare of Bs 3.50, up from Bs 3. Operators had asked for Bs 4.
  • Operators: leader Mario Guerrero said drivers are not satisfied. He said the stoppage targets the national government’s diesel price decree, and could be lifted if the government calls talks.
  • Next step: a wider meeting of operators is to be called. Date and time TBA.
  • Elsewhere in the department: transport operators in San José de Chiquitos announced a road blockade from Thursday night over fuel shortages. Its current status is not confirmed.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Viru Viru airport on October 5–6: arrange a hotel transfer or radio taxi in advance, and confirm it the night before.
  • Watch Sunday’s news: the decision could come at short notice.
  • Road trips east of Santa Cruz: ask locally about blockades before setting out.
  • Standby travelers: leave very early for the airport. A missed flight during a stoppage is hard to recover.
