October 9, 2026 — Newcastle, New South Wales, expects a record 30,000 cruise passengers in its 2026–27 season, with 18 ship calls through April 2027 and six ships visiting for the first time.
Crown Princess opened the season on Thursday with more than 3,000 passengers, Seatrade Cruise News reports. Newcastle is about 150 km north of Sydney.

The numbers
- Growth: cruise visits have risen about 13 percent a year on average over the past decade, the Port Authority of New South Wales says.
- Local value: about A$20 million a year.
- On the pier: 30 new Welcome Volunteers, plus updated signage and new tourist maps.
Port Authority chief executive John McKenna called it Newcastle’s “biggest cruise season on record.”
What it means for airline travelers
- Newcastle is a port of call here, not a homeport. Nothing in the report changes where you fly to join a ship.
- Check your embarkation city. The report does not list where each ship’s cruise starts. Sydney (SYD) is the nearest major international airport.
- Long-haul standby to Australia needs a buffer. The season runs through the southern summer peak. Arrive two days early.
- Interline rates: the report mentions none.
