October 12, 2026 — Two strikes that threatened flights in Italy on Friday, October 16, have been called off: the national air traffic control strike and the ground-staff strikes at Florence and Pisa airports. Wednesday’s general strike in Tuscany is still on and will slow trains across the region.
Called off: October 16 air strikes
- Air traffic control (ENAV): The four-hour national strike set for 1 p.m.–5 p.m. on October 16 by the FILT-CGIL and UGL-TA unions has been revoked, according to Money.it. It no longer appears among active October 16 strikes on the Transport Ministry’s official strike calendar.
- Florence and Pisa airports: The USB union’s 24-hour ground-staff strikes at Toscana Aeroporti and its handling companies, planned for October 16, are also listed as revoked.
- Still on for October 16: a 24-hour strike by easyJet cabin crew based in Italy and action by Poste Air Cargo technical crew. Italian law protects flights between 7 a.m.–10 a.m. and 6 p.m.–9 p.m.
Still on: Tuscany general strike, Wednesday, October 14
The CGIL union in Tuscany has called a regional general strike for public and private sectors.
| Service | Strike hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Trenitalia and Italo trains (Tuscany staff) | 9:01 a.m.–5 p.m. | High-speed, long-distance and regional trains may be cancelled or changed, including just before and after the strike window |
| Local buses and trams | 4 hours | Times vary by company |
| Air transport | Excluded | Flights not part of this strike |
A march is planned in Massa from 9 a.m.
Coming up
The USB union has called a national general strike for Friday, October 30, with trains affected from 9 p.m. on October 29 to 8:59 p.m. on October 30 (Transport Ministry calendar).
What it means for airline travelers
- Friday’s flights in and out of Florence and Pisa now look much safer for standby travel, but check the Transport Ministry calendar again before you go; Italian strikes can be reinstated or added at short notice.
- On Wednesday, avoid relying on a Florence–Pisa, Florence–Rome or other Tuscan train between about 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Travel early in the morning or in the evening, and check Trenitalia or Italo for your train.
- If you already hold a train ticket for Wednesday, check Trenitalia’s or Italo’s strike notice for refund and rebooking options.
- Getting to Florence or Pisa airport on Wednesday: allow extra time, as local buses will stop for four hours.
