PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico, October 12, 2026 — Update to our October 11 story. Puerto Vallarta’s Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) will stay closed until at least 8 a.m. on Tuesday, October 13. That is a day later than planned. Hurricane Simon is moving slowly along the Jalisco coast, and forecasters expect it to turn back toward Mexico on Wednesday.
What changed since Sunday
- Reopening pushed back a day: on Sunday the airport said it will stay closed to all operations until 8 a.m. Tuesday, October 13, local time, “by order of the aviation authorities,” UnoTV reports. The earlier target was 8 a.m. Monday.
- Why: an updated notice to pilots (NOTAM) said rain would get heavier on Sunday afternoon and early Monday, according to UnoTV. Airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) linked the change to revised NOTAMs, Proceso reports.
- Tuesday is not guaranteed: GAP says the reopening time may change with the weather. A team will inspect the airport once the storm passes. Confirmed reopening: TBA.
- Damage: no damage report has been published.
- How long it has been shut: the airport closed at 6 p.m. on Saturday, October 10.
The storm
- At 6 p.m. CST Sunday the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) put Simon about 50 miles south of Cabo Corrientes as a Category 3 hurricane with 125 mph winds, moving northwest at about 5 mph. It had not made landfall.
- A hurricane warning covers the coast from Punta San Telmo to El Roblito.
- The NHC expects the center to move farther offshore on Monday and Tuesday, then turn back toward the Mexican coast on Wednesday, October 14.
Airline measures
- Volaris cancelled flights to and from Puerto Vallarta, Tepic and Colima on October 11 and 12. It said service would resume in stages from the evening of October 12, UnoTV reports. That was announced before the airport extended its closure, so check Volaris for PVR flights.
- Aeroméxico has a waiver for flights on October 9–11 to, from or through Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo and Colima. Changes must be made by October 14 for travel on the same date.
- Check your own airline’s alert page for waivers covering October 12 and 13.
What it means for non-revs
- Do not try to fly into PVR before Tuesday. Even then, the reopening depends on inspections, and the first flights out will go to stranded tourists who have been waiting since Saturday.
- Getting out will be hard all week. Three days of cancelled flights means a large backlog. Expect full flights out of PVR through the week, especially to U.S. and Canadian hubs.
- Watch Wednesday’s forecast. The NHC expects Simon to head back toward the coast on Wednesday, which could bring new disruption soon after the airport reopens.
- If you are already in Puerto Vallarta, follow GAP’s advice and stay in your hotel until your airline confirms your flight. Book extra hotel nights rather than waiting at the terminal.
- Consider Guadalajara (GDL) as an alternate once roads are safe. Check road conditions before you set out.
