October 14, 2026 — United told MileagePlus members on Tuesday, October 13 that Premier status will soon be based on spending only. Premier qualifying flights (PQFs) go away, and the 1K threshold goes up. Separately, United has finished moving its Guam hub to an all-737 MAX 8 fleet, earlier than planned.
MileagePlus: status based only on spending
From January 1, 2027, which is the qualifying year for 2028 status, there is a single PQP threshold for each tier:
| Tier | Current requirement | 2027 requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Silver | 6,000 PQP, or 15 PQF + 5,000 PQP | 6,000 PQP |
| Gold | 12,000 PQP, or 30 PQF + 10,000 PQP | 12,000 PQP |
| Platinum | 18,000 PQP, or 45 PQF + 15,000 PQP | 18,000 PQP |
| 1K | 28,000 PQP, or 60 PQF + 22,000 PQP | 32,000 PQP |
- You still need at least four flights a year on United or United Express. Partner flights don’t count toward this.
- Members with an eligible United credit card get a head-start deposit of 5% of their tier’s requirement: 300, 600, 900 or 1,600 PQP. Cards opened by December 31, 2026 also qualify.
- Card PQP caps: Explorer, 1,000 a year; Quest, 18,000; Club cards, 32,000.
- Members who already qualify mostly on spending will see little change apart from the higher 1K bar. Members who relied on flight segments will need to spend more or use a co-branded card.
Guam: all 737 MAX 8s now
FlightGlobal reports that United has replaced the older 737-800s at its Guam hub ahead of schedule. Its Pacific flights from Guam now use 10 Boeing 737 MAX 8s. The original target date was not published (TBA).
What it means for non-revs
- Status changes don’t affect your pass priority, but they do matter when you fly on a paid ticket. If you’ve been earning Premier mostly through flights, plan for the higher spending bar from 2027.
- Upgrade lists may change. With status tied only to spending, the mix of elite members could shift. How that affects upgrade lists and open premium seats isn’t known yet (TBA).
- Guam: The MAX 8s replace older 737-800s. United didn’t say whether seat counts on Guam routes have changed, so check loads as usual.
