October 30, 2026 — The US Embassy in Santo Domingo issued a security alert today. It says the embassy keeps getting reports of travelers, including US citizens, who were drugged and then robbed or sexually assaulted in the Dominican Republic.

What the embassy says

  • How it happens: Attackers sometimes find victims through online dating apps or at bars and nightclubs. Attacks have happened in private homes such as short-term rentals, and in or around hotels and motels.
  • Advisory level: The Dominican Republic stays at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, because of crime. The level did not change.
  • Embassy guidance: Be careful with dating apps. Meet new people only in public places and avoid isolated spots such as private residences or hotel rooms. Tell your hotel’s door attendant or concierge your visitor policy before inviting anyone to your room. Never leave food or drinks unattended, and don’t accept them from people you have just met. Tell someone where you are going.

Emergency contacts

Who Contact
Emergencies 911
POLITUR (tourist police) 809-200-3500 (English); WhatsApp 809-754-3096; the POLITUR app
US Embassy Santo Domingo +1-809-567-7775; SDOAmericans@state.gov

The embassy asks anyone who is sexually assaulted to contact both POLITUR and the embassy.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Layovers count too: A short stay in Punta Cana, Santo Domingo or Puerto Plata, including a night spent waiting for standby seats, carries the same risk. Use the same caution as on a planned vacation.
  • Rentals: If you stay in a short-term rental, don’t invite people you have just met back to it.
  • Save the numbers: Put the POLITUR and embassy numbers in your phone before you land.
  • Register: US citizens can enroll in STEP; Canadians can sign up for Registration of Canadians Abroad.
