Update to yesterday’s Italy story: transport operators say normal service today, demonstrations are going ahead, and an Italo rail strike has been called for November 9.
October 30, 2026 — Italy’s general strike is going ahead today in schools, healthcare, public offices and private industry. Trenitalia and Trenord say trains are running normally because the government ordered the transport part of the strike postponed. The USB union has said it will defy that order, so some local disruption is still possible. US diplomatic posts have issued alerts for marches in Rome and Naples.
What changed in the past 24 hours
- Trains: Il Sole 24 Ore reports that Trenitalia and Trenord expect to run normal schedules. ATM in Milan and other operators also say they will run, though staff joining the strike could still cause some disruption. The rail strike that was set for 21:00 on October 29 to 20:59 on October 30 was cancelled under the Transport Ministry’s order. That order cited the legally protected period around All Souls’ Day, from October 30 to November 5.
- Union defiance: USB has called the order illegitimate and says it will strike anyway, and TRAVEL Extra reported on October 30 that unions are still determined to go ahead. This run did not find independent confirmation of widespread train or flight cancellations today.
- Rome: The US Embassy says USB is holding a demonstration at 10:30 a.m. today in Piazza dei Cinquecento, beside Roma Termini station. It also warns that air travel and taxis may be disrupted and that disruption may continue after the strike hours end.
- Naples (new alert, October 30): The US Consulate General says a march starting at 10:00 a.m. will run from Central Station (Piazza Garibaldi) to Piazza del Plebiscito. It expects 3,000 to 5,000 people and says traffic may be disrupted.
- Ports: Il Sole 24 Ore says dockworkers are striking as part of an international day of protest.
- New strike date: Italo (NTV) rail staff have called a national strike for Monday, November 9, from 9:01 a.m. to 4:59 p.m. The unions are Filt Cgil, Fit Cisl, Ugl Ferrovieri, Fast Confsal and Orsa Ferrovie.

What it means for airline travelers
- Today: Check your train or flight in the operator’s app right before you leave. Services are scheduled to run, but union defiance could still cause local cancellations.
- Rome and Naples: Allow extra time around Roma Termini and Napoli Centrale this morning, as both marches start next to the stations. If you’re heading to Fiumicino or Capodichino, leave early.
- Plan around November 20–22: A national rail strike, an air traffic control stoppage and the Malpensa ENAV strike fall on back-to-back days. Standby travel will be harder then, because passengers from cancelled flights will fill the open seats.
- Refunds: If a train is cancelled because of a strike, you can usually get a full refund or a free rebooking from Trenitalia or Italo.
- Register: US citizens can enroll in STEP; Canadians can sign up for Registration of Canadians Abroad.
