November 6, 2026 — Royal Caribbean’s newest Icon-class ship, Legend of the Seas, turned toward Puerto Rico in the middle of its first Atlantic crossing so the U.S. Coast Guard could airlift a sick passenger. The line has not announced any delay to the ship’s Fort Lauderdale arrival or its first U.S. sailings.

What happened

Legend of the Seas (Royal Caribbean Group, 5,610 guests) left Barcelona on October 25 on a 13-night transatlantic voyage to Fort Lauderdale. On November 4, after an onboard announcement about a medical emergency, the ship changed course toward Puerto Rico. A Coast Guard helicopter lifted the passenger off on the morning of November 5 and took them ashore for further care. The passenger’s condition has not been confirmed.

One guest who watched the rescue called it “a high-risk maneuver for our captain and the Coast Guard.”

What it means for airline travelers

  • Booked on the November 8 or November 11 sailing? Nothing has changed so far, but watch the Royal Caribbean app and your email for any updated check-in times before you head to the airport.
  • Fly in the day before. Fort Lauderdale (FLL) is the closest airport to Port Everglades, with Miami (MIA) and Palm Beach (PBI) as backups. If you are flying standby, a day’s cushion lets you roll to a later flight or switch airports without missing the ship.
  • Disembarking on November 7? No late arrival has been announced, but leave room in your onward flight plans in case the ship’s schedule shifts.
  • Interline and travel-industry rates: nothing in today’s news changes them.
