November 6, 2026 — Viceroy has opened The Observatory, A Viceroy Resort, in downtown Ketchum, Idaho, bringing a new luxury hotel to the Sun Valley ski area just ahead of the winter season. Its signature feature is a rooftop observatory for stargazing.
What is happening
The resort announced its opening on November 2, 2026 and is already taking guests, Rus Tourism News reported on November 6. It sits inside the Central Idaho Dark Sky Reserve, the first reserve in the United States to earn Gold Tier status from DarkSky International, and the rooftop observatory is built around that setting. Guests can book guided telescope sessions, talks on the constellations and private astronomy experiences, some led with local astrophotographers.
The hotel has 73 guestrooms and suites. It also includes 12 penthouse residences of about 1,500 to 3,500 sq ft, with two to four bedrooms, full kitchens, fireplaces and private outdoor space; some can be connected to adjoining hotel rooms.

What it means for airline travelers
- Closest airport: Friedman Memorial Airport (SUN) in Hailey is about 12 miles from Ketchum, according to Visit Sun Valley. KMVT reported in August that Alaska, American, Delta and United plan winter 2026–27 nonstop service to SUN from Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Salt Lake City. Many of these flights are seasonal and the published date ranges differ between sources, so check the current schedule for your dates.
- Backup airports: Visit Sun Valley puts Twin Falls (TWF) about a 1.5-hour drive away and Boise (BOI) about 150 miles away, roughly 2.5 hours or more by car. Mountain weather can disrupt SUN flights in winter, so it is worth knowing the drive options.
- Opening-season gaps: the spa opens later in the season, so early guests will not have it.
- Night skies: the observatory programs are the reason to choose this hotel; ask about session times when you book.
- Discount rates: the report does not mention travel-industry or airline-employee rates. It says reservations are made through Viceroy’s website.
