October 28, 2026 — Hyatt has opened Thompson Rome, the Thompson Hotels brand’s first property in Italy, inside a restored 1940s landmark on Via delle Botteghe Oscure, a short walk from Piazza Venezia and the Roman Forum.

What is happening

Hyatt announced the opening on October 27, and the hotel is already taking reservations. The building is the former national headquarters of the Italian Communist Party. During the conversion, workers uncovered a sculpted wall and an inlaid floor by artist Giò Pomodoro that had been hidden for decades; both are now on display, along with the restored original marble staircase and a golden star inlaid in the lobby floor.

The project was first announced in 2023 with a mid-2024 target and slipped to the fourth quarter of 2026 before opening this week.

Rooms feature walnut paneling and blue ceramic-tiled bathrooms; some have balconies over the street, others look across Rome’s rooftops or open onto a private patio. The art collection draws on the Scuola Romana and Scuola di Piazza del Popolo painters plus contemporary Italian artists, and a rotating artist-in-residence program is planned. Guests can also book cooking classes, tastings and a seventh-floor photography experience.

La Revue des Hôtels reported a rate from €524 a night for two in a Queen room, with breakfast and free cancellation, when it checked on October 27.

What it means for airline travelers

  • Airports: Rome is served by Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA). The hotel is in the historic center, so plan a taxi or train-plus-taxi from the airport.
  • World of Hyatt: As a Hyatt-affiliated Thompson hotel, it is bookable through Hyatt’s site; check whether points stays and elite benefits show for your dates.
  • Location: The Pantheon, Roman Forum and Colosseum are within walking distance, which makes it a practical base for a short layover or a quick Rome trip.
  • Small hotel, fast sell-out: With only 69 keys, new-opening demand could tighten availability. Book a refundable rate early if your travel dates are flexible.
  • Industry rates: The announcement did not mention travel-industry or airline-employee rates.
