October 15, 2026 — New York’s Plaza Hotel, the 119-year-old landmark at Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, will shut its doors in January 2027 for at least four years while its historic facade is repaired and restored.
What is happening
The hotel announced the closure on October 14, 2026, in a release distributed through Business Wire. It said the landmark-protected facade needs work that will cause “significant intrusion to operations,” so the hotel will close for the duration rather than stay open around the scaffolding. The closure begins in January 2027 and is expected to last at least four years. No reopening date has been set, and the hotel has not published the cost or full scope of the project.
Rolling Out reports that the hotel is operated by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts and that the Palm Court and the hotel’s event rooms are expected to close during the work. The Plaza also contains 181 condominium units; the reports do not say whether residents will have to leave.

Who is affected
- Hotel staff: The Hotel & Gaming Trades Council represents 378 union members at the Plaza. Rolling Out reports they will have the right to return to their jobs at the same pay when the hotel reopens, and the union plans to help them find other work in the meantime.
- Weddings and events: Rolling Out spoke with a couple who had booked a May 1, 2027 wedding at the Plaza and learned of the closure only after contacting the concierge. Their planner described the situation as “planning all over again.”
- Famous rooms: The Palm Court and the event rooms are expected to close along with the guest rooms.
What it means for airline travelers
- Last chance for a stay: If the Plaza has been on your list, the window is now through the end of 2026. After that, plan on at least four years before you can stay again.
- Bookings in 2027 and later: The announcement does not explain how existing reservations or event contracts dated after the closure will be handled. If you hold one, contact the hotel directly now rather than waiting for it to reach out.
- Getting there: New York’s three major airports, JFK, LaGuardia (LGA) and Newark (EWR), all serve Manhattan. With an early-2027 closure, layover or trip plans built around the Plaza for next year will need a different hotel.
- Industry and airline-employee rates: None were mentioned in the announcement or reports.
